The T20 World Cup 2024 in the USA has been distinctive in many ways. From the use of drop-in pitches to teams training in public parks, the event has introduced several new experiences. A surprising development occurred in New York, where the Indian cricket team is competing in its Group A matches. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to secure external gym memberships for the players due to dissatisfaction with the hotel’s fitness facilities.
As reported by Cricket Next, the players are now working out at a well-known gym chain in the city, as the gym at their Long Island hotel did not meet their standards. A source confirmed, “Yes, the team doesn’t use the hotel gym and has a membership at a nearby gym, which is very popular.”
Earlier, it was noted that the Indian team was displeased with the “average facilities” at Cantiague Park, which the ICC designated as an official practice area with six drop-in pitches.
Despite these challenges, India is performing strongly in the tournament, having won both of their Group A matches against Ireland and Pakistan. They are poised to qualify for the Super 8s, with upcoming matches against co-hosts USA and Canada.
While the USA is not traditionally a cricketing nation, the ICC is making significant efforts to promote the sport there. Reflecting on the situation, the source added, “We are all aware of the rushed arrangements everywhere. From practice grounds to the hotel’s gym facilities, everything is in disarray. Chaos is the right word.”
