Why Were Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa’s Sitara-e-Imtiaz Nominations Rejected?

A new controversy has emerged over Pakistan’s prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz awards after Sindh’s Minister for Culture and Tourism, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, claimed that the names of popular actors Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa were recommended for the national honour but were rejected by the federal government.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of a theatre festival in Karachi, the provincial minister said the Sindh Culture Department had submitted both actors’ names for the award twice. According to his statement, the nominations were made following recommendations from a committee consisting of well-known personalities.

However, the federal government reportedly rejected the recommendations for both actors. What has raised further questions is that, according to the minister, the Sindh government was not informed about the reasons behind the rejection.
