The actor revealed that he had never been a regular drinker before the separation. However, after the divorce, he turned to alcohol as a way to deal with his emotional pain. He shared that on the very first night after Reena left, he consumed alcohol for the first time in a serious way, something he had never done before in his life.

The actor also reflected on his marriage history, noting that he and Reena Dutta were married in 1986 and separated in 2002. They share two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. Later, he married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, but this marriage also ended in 2021. Despite their separation, they continue to co-parent their son Azad.
