Why Shah Rukh Khan’s National Award Nomination Became Controversial

The announcement of the 71st National Film Awards in India brought celebrations for many stars and their fans. South Indian actress Urvashi, who won the Best Supporting Actor award for her role in the Malayalam film Aluzhko, openly questioned the selection process. She expressed surprise that Shah Rukh Khan was chosen as Best Actor over veteran performer Vijay Ragavan, who played a physically challenging role in Pookalam.

In her words, “Even if I were offered millions, I would not take on that role. But Vijay Ragavan, despite his age, delivered it perfectly. At the very least, he deserved a special mention.” Urvashi further questioned the difference in criteria between Shah Rukh’s performance and Vijay Ragavan’s, arguing that one was awarded Best Actor while the other was placed only in the supporting category.

The controversy grew as Urvashi also criticized the overlooking of Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life) and its lead actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, as well as questioning why the Best Actress award was not shared between deserving performers. She concluded, “An award is not a pension. If you are giving me something, I should feel happy to receive it.”

On the other hand, actor Mukesh Khanna came forward in defense of Shah Rukh Khan. He reminded critics that awards often recognize specific works, not an artist’s entire career. “People say Shah Rukh should have received this for Swades, but remember, A.R. Rahman won his Oscar for ‘Jai Ho’, not his earlier beautiful compositions. Shah Rukh has worked for 40 years — there is nothing wrong if he wins now,” Khanna stated.

The debate shows how prestigious awards can become hot topics, with opinions divided between admiration and criticism. Whether one supports the decision or not, Shah Rukh Khan’s win remains a landmark in his career and a major talking point in Bollywood.
