Maryam Nawaz recalls her time in prison: “Death cell mein reh kar aayi hoon, phir bhi kabhi media ke saamnay nahin royi”
Maryam Nawaz, the newly-appointed Senior Vice President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) for its leaders’ behavior after being jailed.
In 1999, following a military coup led by then-army leader General (ret.) Pervez Musharraf, her father, former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif, was imprisoned in Attock Fort for fourteen months.
Maryam Nawaz, speaking about the five months she spent in jail, stated, “Death cell mein reh kar aaye hoon, phir bhi kabhi media ke saamnay nahin royi” (I stayed in a death cell, but I didn’t shed a single tear in front of the media), adding that she was incarcerated during extreme heat but didn’t feel sorry for herself.
I had a single charpai, and the bathroom and room were identical,” she explained.
She reminded the press that other PML-N leaders had previously spent months in jail without being granted bail.
Maryam Nawaz stated that PTI officials could not endure even two days in jail, emphasizing that this is nothing in comparison to what the PML-N has endured.
She underlined that the PTI was under the protection of the former spymaster, Director General Inter-Services Intelligence, General (ret.) Faiz Hameed, but that protection has now been withdrawn.
